Confession time: I've never really been a fan of the phrase "black girl magic." I'm not sure why, it's always been kind of...meh to me. However, there is NO other way to describe what I saw at the Golden Globes last night!
I walked away from that show feeling so inspired! The fabulous gowns, flawless beat faces, the hard work and consistency coming to fruition; it was magical!
One of the most inspiring stories from last night is the story of Issa Rae. I began watching her online series "Awkward Black Girl" my senior year of college in 2011. Six years later, she's at the Golden Globes nominated for Best Actress for her HBO show "Insecure." She is so relatable to me and so many other young, professional black women like me. Her work truly resonates and shows the reality of our lives. Not only am I a fan of her work, but I am fan of her journey as well. She is a true inspiration!
I also have to get into some of my favorite looks of the night starting with the beautiful Kerry Washington. From the berry lip, to the sleek, straight hair and bold fashionable dress, I lived for it all! Her look was fire!
My second favorite look for the night has to go to the gorgeous Janelle Monáe for her glamorous take on classic black and white style. Her dress was a show stopper, fun yet elegant. She completed the look with a bedazzled up-do and natural makeup. Five stars.
I was also a huge fan of Tracee Eliss Ross who was clearly channeling her iconic mother, Diana Ross, with her sleeked back pony and snatched dress. She looked glam and took home the Best Actress award--the first time a black woman has won since Debbie Allen in 1983!
Needless to say I lived for it all! Excellence.
