Apologies for my delay in new posts. I have been really busy these past few weeks working, organizing events at my alma mater, and preparing for my trip to Cali this past weekend to visit the boyfriend (!). I wanted to give a update on my hair natural hair journey and my recent progress that I am so excited about. After an all natural summer complete with twist outs, flat twists, braid outs, buns, and protective styling.....
I have finally grown my hair past its stubborn stage (slightly longer than shoulder length) to almost bra strap length! I could not be more excited! I know hair is not the most important thing in the world, however it took years for this growth and I am excited to see progress.
I am confident now in my natural hair regime and the methods that work for my mane. Here is a list of my must haves, rules and regulations to healthy hair.
Natural Curls love, love, love |
Blow Dry at the Hair Salon. Almost to BSL! |
1. Must sleep with a silk bonnet, scarf, headwrap etc. This step is essential to eliminating split ends and the hardest step for me personally. When I am sleepy, I sleep, hair be damned. I have started doing this step earlier in the night to avoid the "sleepy & comfortable in bed and will not move to do anything" problem.
2. Avoid heat. Use flat irons, curling irons sparingly. I have decide to wear my natural curls every other style. (i.e. curls, straight, curls, straight). This method works best for me to preserve my new growth and give my hair a much needed break between styles.
3. I have found some products and styles I absolutely love. Flat twist outs are my go to (tutorial coming soon), with a messy curls bun coming in 2nd and braid outs 3rd.
My Favorite Products List
Clarifying/Cleansing Shampoo: Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo
No-Poo (Sulfate Free) Shampoo: SheaMoisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Shine Shampoo
Conditioner: Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner
Leave In Conditioner: Kinky-Curly Knot Today Leave In Conditioner
Cream Styler: SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie
The majority of these products are pretty cheap since I am on a post-grad budget (some only $4!). Everything but the Moroccan Oil can also be found at your local Target, Walgreens, etc. As for my more expensive items (Moroccan Oil, Kinky Curly Curling Custard) I view them as an investment in my personal growth and healthy hair. Luckily, a little goes a long way with these products and they tend to last me for a very long time!
